Ramiro and Q's Charm 3rd in $25,000 Lexington Encore Grand Prix posted by deniseq on May 10, 2009 10:23 AM
The second week in Lexington proved to be just as exciting as the first. Ramiro was double-clear with both Sydney and Q’s Charm (Henry) in the Welcome Stake. Sydney was first of the two to go, and Ramiro used the experience to his advantage with Henry, tightening the turns and beating Sydney’s time. It was great fun to see Henry, mostly known for his power, better Sydney’s time, since she’s known for her natural speed. Henry was 2nd and Sydney was 4th.

Saturday’s grand prix saw Henry clear in the first round, but Sydney was not as sharp and didn’t make the jump-off. The field was similar to that of the first week, with a few additional challengers (including Henri Kovacs, who posted a double-clear), but again it basically came down to a rivalry between Ramiro and Tracy Magness. Tracy won the Welcome Stake and on Saturday went ahead of Ramiro and laid down a fast track that forced him and the other riders to find the better turns and ratchet up the speed. Ramiro did both—and cut 2 seconds off the time—but Henry caught a rail and they settled for third since Henri's slower but clear round put them in second. It was a great effort by Ramiro and Henry.

The young jumpers again did well, both jumping clear rounds in their qualifying classes, with Optima taking a fifth in the 7/8 Year-Olds and Forever placing fourth in the 5 Year-Olds.

Sydney and Ramiro Score First Grand Prix Win: $25,000 Rockbridge Grand Prix posted by deniseq on May 10, 2009 10:05 AM
The first week in Lexington, Virginia, was fantastic. Sydney won the grand prix on Saturday night, showing great form in her first big class since her 4th-place grand prix finish in January before the injury that kept on her the sidelines for the rest of WEF. Ramiro impressively strategized their jump-off track, shaving seconds between the timers and the first jump as well as on the rollbacks, setting a fast pace for the rest of the field to catch. Joe Fargis, Tracy Magness, and Ainsley Vince were all to follow—all very fast riders—but while Tracy nearly had the time, she took the rail at the last fence, as did Ainsley. Joe had an earlier rail, so the blue went to Ramiro. The management runs a nice show, so there were enough spectators to cheer the winners and try to catch the ribbons the riders tossed during the victory gallop. Sydney was met at the in-gate by little girl fans, who later looked for Ramiro at the riders’ table where they were signing autographs.

Ramiro and Henry (Q’s Charm) won the Welcome Stake on Thursday, going fast and double-clear against the same horses who later competed in the grand prix. It was a great win for Henry--his first night class and only second time indoors. Sydney was clear in the first round, but pulled a shoe and then a rail in the jump-off, finishing in 8th place. Her win on Saturday was all the more exciting given that a pulled shoe and grabbed heel had caused the injury in Florida.

The young jumpers were good as well, gaining lots of experience at a new venue, competing indoors, and flatting on the hills of the beautiful cross-country course. Optima was super in the 7/8 Year-Old Qualifier class, jumping double-clear to acquire her third clear of three clear rounds needed to be eligible for the championship at the Hampton Classic and coming in 3rd in the class. She was good on Wednesday as well, earning 6th in the 1.25m class. Forever Z, Tiffany Ann Avon’s five-year old who joined us a few weeks ago in Florida, jumped some clear rounds and learned a lot from a few green mistakes. Forever is a charming character and talented jumper, so we’re looking forward to next week and the summer shows.

Cheer’s also on this trip, and she was double-clear and 2nd with Ramiro in the 1.25m class on Wednesday and 6th in the Low Jr/A-O with me (Denise). Cheer’s being a great teacher and good sport as we’re riding through the learning curve on the way up the levels.

Q’s Charm Masters 1.50m and Takes on the WEF Grand Prix posted by deniseq on May 10, 2009 10:00 AM

Q’s Charm (Henry) and Ramiro had a fantastic WEF. Henry started off with a clear round and one time fault to finish 9th in the $25,000 Fidelity Investments 1.50m class at WEF 1. Henry stayed strong throughout the circuit, finishing again 9th in the $25,000 Fidelity Investments 1.50m class at WEF 5, over a track considered so difficult that it became known as the “1.50m Olympics.” Henry was 9th in the $30,000 WEF Challenge Cup Series Round VII CSIO at WEF 8, Henry’s first FEI event, during which Ramiro and Henry were alternates on Argentina’s Nations Cup team.

Ramiro and Henry ended the circuit with great performances, going double-clear and finishing 11th of 49 in the $30,000 WEF Challenge Cup Series Round X and capping off the week 2nd in Sunday’s $75,000 Bank of America CSI 2* Grand Prix at WEF 10. Ramiro was second in the order and the first to go clear in the first round. The jump-off was set to be fast with the likes of Peter Charles, Beezie Madden, Eric Lamaze, and Rodrigo Pessoa riding later in the order. Ramiro rode a carefully choreographed jump-off track that showed off Henry’s strengths and was fast enough to force the other riders to ride inside turns and take risks to beat the time; all but Peter Charles had a rail or a refusal when they risked the tighter turns.

Henry not only came into his own as a Grand Prix horse but really stepped up for Ramiro after Sydney’s injury during the 1.45m at WEF 3 kept her out of the rest of the circuit. We are so proud of Henry and Ramiro and their terrific season!

Here are the links to Sydney’s 1.40m (she was 6th) and 1.45m (she grabbed her heel and shoe in the jump-off) that she did early at WEF 3, aiming for Sunday’s grand prix. The weather was misty that week, so the videos are fun to see.

Sydney and Ramiro Shine in Sunday Grand Prix at WEF 2 posted by deniseq on May 10, 2009 09:17 AM

Showing no ill effects from losing her shoe in the middle of Thursday's Challenge class but all of her big heart, Sydney jumped clear on Sunday in the $50,000 Equisport Insurance Agency Grand Prix, one of nine horses to qualify for the jump-off. The course was challenging but flowing, with the real test coming from the size of the jumps, which were really big for so early in the circuit. Sydney and Ramiro capitalized on the lessons they learned at the Hamptons and jumped beautifully through the combinations and improved their technique at the tall verticals.

The jump-off was exciting with the first few riders having a refusal, multiple rails, and only one clear—and all of these riders, except Peter Charles with the clear round, had the last jump down. Sydney was sixth to go, and after Ramiro conferred with Joe on how to better the clear fast time, Ramiro rode a spectacular textbook ride that shaved a full second off the leading time AND left the last jump up (a big vertical that followed a triple bar that encouraged the horses to open up down the line). But Sydney had gotten a bit flat to an oxer in the middle of the short course and clipped the rail, so they left the ring in second place—with the time but with four faults. Of those that followed, Peter Charles on a second horse and Lauren Hough opted for slower times and left the jumps up. Syd ended up fourth. We’re so proud of Sydney and Ramiro; what a great start to the year!

Mel and Arctic Blast Have New Homes posted by deniseq on October 27, 2008 01:14 PM
We are happy to announce that David Attal’s Mel has a new home with amateur rider Joe Comunale, who rides with Frank Madden and Maria Schaub at Hunter’s Moon. Mel and Ramiro had a terrific year, and we wish Joe all the best for continued success with Mel.

We are also pleased that Arctic Blast (also known as Champ/Charlie) will be staying at Crossroads Equestrian Center with new owner Jessica Pavia. Jessica has been riding Charlie since the beginning of the year, and they placed 4th out of 84 riders in the Connecticut Hunter & Jumper Association Children’s Medal Finals. We wish Jessica and Charlie all the best for a continuing happy partnership.

Ramiro and Henry (Q’s Charm) End the Season with Style posted by deniseq on October 7, 2008 12:08 PM
Ramiro and Henry finished a close 2nd in the $25,000 Grand Prix of Princeton at Hunter Farms. It was an exciting class, with the winner jumping the only clear jump-off round but taking his time to do it and accruing 3 time faults, finishing with just 1 fault less than Henry’s fast time but 4 faults with a rail at a tall plank in the jump-off.

Ramiro rode brilliantly, keeping Henry focused on answering the many questions asked by Richard Jeffrey’s technical course in the first round. They were one pair of only four out of forty-two starters to jump clear and advance to the jump-off. The 2nd place finish is an impressive end to this year’s season, which has seen Henry move successfully through the 1.40m and 1.45m ranks to place in two other $25,000 grand prix classes and earn a 6th in his first $50,000 Sunday grand prix.

Congratulations to Ramiro on a great day and to Ramiro and Titi for a terrific season with all the horses here at Quiet Corner.

In other news, Abby placed third in the Open over Fences class at her first show of the year for the Smith College Equestrian Team. Congratulations on a good start on the Intercollegiate circuit.

Hat-trick for Ramiro at Black River Farm posted by deniseq on September 30, 2008 12:02 PM
Ramiro and Titi had a great week at Black River Farm Autumn Classic. The show is one of our fall favorites, usually graced with beautiful weather at a nice facility with a friendly, laid-back atmosphere. Ramiro won three classes and had a good shot at a fourth win in the grand prix with both Cataro and Sydney scheduled to compete, but with the torrential rain, Sunday’s classes were cancelled.

Opening day saw Ramiro and David Attal’s Mel as the winners of the $2,500 Open Welcome Class, with Titi and Q’s Cheer taking fourth. Both horses jumped great double-clear rounds.

Ramiro and Cataro bested a group of twenty-four riders in Friday’s $5,000 Grand Prix Qualifier, with Sydney and Ramiro not far behind in third place. Cataro and Sydney were both brilliant in the muck, showing their experience and big hearts as they deftly made their way through the puddles, posting double-clear rounds and fast jump-off times.

Mel again showed the great progress he’s made this year, winning Saturday’s $10,000 Speed Class in even muddier conditions and steady rain. Mel demonstrated how handy and careful he’s become as Ramiro guided him on all the inside turns and forward distances, leaving all the jumps up and outpacing the second-place finisher by 5 seconds.

Congratulations to Ramiro on a terrific end to the season with Mel, Cataro, and Sydney!

While those horses wound down the 2008 show season, Titi brought Kathrin Ascher-Andrusch’s Leon back to the schooling classes, and Ramiro and Orlana returned to the show ring after a few months’ hiatus. Both horses performed really well, getting quickly back into form and showing the benefits of their training at home this summer. Titi and Gale Hoffman’s Tibet also had a good schooling show, with Tibet gaining confidence in every class.

More news next week after Henry, Cheer, Orlana, and Leon show at Hunter Farms.

HITS Summer Successes posted by deniseq on August 14, 2008 10:09 AM
The Saugerties HITS shows proved successful ventures as many of the QCF horses moved up to new divisions with great results. Abby and Royal were champions in the Modified Jr/A-O Hunters, with 1st and 2nd over fences and 5th under saddle. Henry (Q’s Charm) made his Sunday debut with an impressive 6th in the $50,000 Strongid C 2X Grand Prix. Ramiro and Henry also earned 7th in the $25,000 ARIAT Grand Prix and won the Level 8 during week IV. Q’s Cheer and Titi ended the series with beautiful clear rounds in the Level 7 classes, earning 5th and placing 9th, just out of the ribbons.

Ramiro and Sydney continued their grand prix success with a 5th-place finish in the $25,000 ARIAT Grand Prix during week V, jumping off in the driving rain. Ramiro’s great results with Sydney and Henry have paid off: As of August 8, Ramiro is 24th on the USEF Computer Ranking, breaking into the all-important top 30 on the list. Congratulations!

Ramiro also piloted Cataro and Mel to ribbons in the Level 6 and 7; placing 3rd, 4th, and 7th with Cataro and 3rd and 7th with Mel. Wendy and Powerland also earned good ribbons, placing 2nd, 3rd, and 5th in the Adult Jumpers during the series.

We’re happy to be joined each summer at HITS by our young riders, and this year Janice and Sonny made their debut in the jumpers. Sonny overcame a bout of colic just before the shows and was bold and brave at the show. Janice and Sonny rode some great rounds, gaining new experience in the jumper ring. Owen and Irish had their first taste of the horse show experience together, and Owen had an opportunity to improve his skills as he learned to ride through all the distractions and commotion (and the rain) that comes with showing. Owen and Janice were also great help around the barn, demonstrating their good horsemanship early in their riding careers.

We’re proud of everyone’s accomplishments this summer and happy to have such a great group with us at Quiet Corner. Congratulations and thanks to all. Fun and Great Results at Lake Placid and I Love New York posted by deniseq on August 14, 2008 10:06 AM
Two weeks in the Adirondacks with good weather (mostly) was a wonderful way to spend part of the summer, and great results in the show ring added to the pleasure. Henry (Q’s Charm) and Ramiro won a 1.45m class with a really fast double-clear round against a 21-horse field that offered good competition, adding to their 3rd, 9th, and 12th placings in other 1.35m and 1.45m classes. Q’s Cheer and Titi had a great clear round in a 1.30m class and placed 18th (we didn’t know that such placings counted), but given that there were 103 in the class, it was a prize well earned! Cheer also later finished 8th in a 1.30m speed class. Royal and Abby placed 4th, 5th, and 7th in the ever-competitive Adult Hunters with lovely rounds. Ramiro and Sydney kept up their consistent performance (they have placed in almost every grand prix they’ve entered) with an 8th place in the $75,000 Grand Prix of Lake Placid CSI 3*.
